Whale tails
This evening I stood in the surf and watched a whale kick its tail just offshore. A couple of spouts preceded the tail, but the glare from the low sun quickly made it impossible to follow along. A lovely special treat.

Last weekend a friend and I road tripped to the Bay Area to watch OMBAC play San Francisco Golden Gate. In rugby terms, the trip was pretty disappointing. The game itself was a dismal 52-15 affair, far and away the worst of the games I’ve seen this season. SFGG maximized all advantages of playing at home, while OMBAC didn’t look lively until the last ten minutes or so. We brought some local friends and family, all of whom had never before seen a rugby game. They had a grand time, and one of them came away wanting to give it a try. Daytime blues fade into twilight blues on the road home. The road trip was far from over at that point. In all, it ended up being a 13 hour trip home. Long, but the scenic route was worth it.
Seeing scattered clumps of California poppies is one of my favorite things about spring.
The last time I tried to take the PCH south, I had to turn back because the road was closed just past Big Sur. This time it’s clear sailing, patchy marine layer, and one of the most beautiful coastlines I’ve ever seen. The wind is pretty icy for April, but it lends an urgency and thrill to the brief stops we’re making to take in the view.
